About South Africa
South Africa is Africa's largest emitter and one of the most coal-dependent economies on earth, with over 80% of electricity from coal via state utility Eskom. Chronic load-shedding has paradoxically accelerated rooftop solar adoption. It was the first country to sign a Just Energy Transition Partnership ($8.5bn, 2021) and has had a carbon tax since 2019.
Key Facts
- Eskom runs 14 coal power stations
- Load-shedding peaked at 335 days in 2023
- Komati coal plant closed 2022 as JETP pilot
