About TaxCarbon
TaxCarbon is an independent guide to carbon pricing in the United Kingdom. We exist because the cost of carbon now reaches far beyond power stations and steelworks: it is embedded in energy bills, import prices, building regulations and the reporting obligations of ordinary companies. Most of the official material explaining it was not written for them.
What we do
We publish explainers, reference data and practical tools covering the schemes that put a price on UK emissions, who they apply to, and what they cost. The site is organised around the questions businesses actually ask: am I in scope, what will it cost, when is the deadline, and what can I do about it.
How we work
Plain English, not policy jargon
Carbon pricing is governed by dense legislation and acronyms. We translate UK ETS, CBAM, SECR and ESOS into language a business owner or finance team can act on.
Numbers you can trace
Where we quote a rate, deadline or threshold we link to the GOV.UK, DESNZ or Climate Change Committee source. Country emissions data is drawn from published national inventories.
Independent and free
TaxCarbon is not a consultancy, broker or software vendor. Nothing here is behind a paywall and we do not sell allowances, credits or offsets.
Honest about uncertainty
Carbon policy changes quickly. When a scheme is closing, under consultation or not yet law, we say so rather than present it as settled.
Where our information comes from
Scheme rules, thresholds and deadlines are taken from legislation and guidance published by the UK Government, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, HM Revenue & Customs and the Environment Agency. Independent analysis is drawn from the Climate Change Committee. Country-level emissions figures are compiled from national greenhouse gas inventories and widely used public datasets, and are rounded for readability. Guides carry a published date; if you spot something out of date, tell us.
What this site is not
TaxCarbon provides general information, not tax, legal or financial advice. Carbon pricing obligations depend on the specifics of your operations, and the schemes described here are amended regularly. Before making decisions that depend on them, check the primary source we link to or speak to a qualified adviser. Our terms set this out in full.
