About Indonesia

Indonesia is the world's largest exporter of thermal coal and a major palm oil producer. Its emissions profile is unusual: land-use change and peatland fires can exceed energy emissions in bad years. The 2022 Just Energy Transition Partnership pledged $20bn to accelerate coal retirement, and a domestic carbon exchange launched in 2023.

Key Facts

  • Nickel export ban (2020) forced onshore smelting
  • Peatland fires in 2015 emitted more than Japan that year
  • JETP targets power-sector peak by 2030
