About Argentina

Argentina's emissions profile is dominated by agriculture and land use: it is a top-3 global exporter of soybeans and beef, so methane and fertiliser matter as much as energy. The Vaca Muerta shale formation is the largest outside the US and is transforming Argentina into a gas exporter. A small carbon tax has existed since 2018. The Milei government has questioned climate commitments and withdrew negotiators from COP29.

Key Facts

  • Vaca Muerta covers 30,000 km2
  • Agriculture is ~37% of emissions
  • Walked out of COP29 negotiations in 2024
